Although the word SEO means search engine optimization it is not about optimizing the search engines but about optimizing your webpage to get a SEO website. In other words it is about taking the right steps to force search engines to index your webpage higher in search pages. The word webpage is used more often in this article than website considering the fact that every webage in a SEO website can be assigned for a different keyword. So let us begin our on page SEO and learn what is seo.
If you are an absolute beginner to website designing please read this excellent article on What Is A Website? For a choice of topics that are most popular on the internet read Most Popular Topics Searched On The Internet.
Step 1: Choose The Keyword
Search engine optimization or SEO best practices require choosing your keyword or keywords. Keyword is the main word (or words) which will define the topic or theme of your SEO website. For the sake of example let us consider that our website is about religion. So our main keyword would naturally be “religion”. Let us also suppose that our website address is religion.com but any other name would be just as fine.
Step 2: Find The Keyword Family
If the same word is repeated again and again it is considered as spamming by the search engine crawlers that index your website or webpages. The number of times a keyword is repeated is called the keyword density. A keyword density of more than 3% is considered unhealthy by search engines for any small business SEO. However if you use synonyms of the main keyword it does not add to the keyword density although the words are considered in the same category when it comes to indexing. A synonym is another word for the main word with similar or close meaning.
I typed the word “‘religion” in my word document, right clicked on it and selected synonyms and got the following synonyms or family of keywords: faith, belief, creed, doctrine, devotion, dogma. Alternately synonyms can be found from a number of free online sites.
Now if my keyword density for the word “religion” exceeds 3% it will be in the region of spam. But if my keyword density for “religion” is 3% and my keyword density for “faith” is 3% and my keyword density for “belief” is 3% and my keyword density for “creed” is 3% and my keyword density for “doctrine” is 3% and my keyword density for “devotion” is 3% and my keyword density for “dogma” is 3% then I am still not considered to be spamming. On the contrary for every keyword my webpage is indexed for “religion” because the search engine crawler treats them as a family. It is also recommended to use words that may be very closely related to the family of keywords for a SEO website. In this case it could be words like scriptures, rituals, prayers, sacrifices, meditation, etc.
Step 3: Find Keyword Phrases
Keyword phrases are a group of two or more words that an internet user types in the search box of the search engine. You can open a free account with Google.com/adwords and use the keyword planner tool to get relevant keyword phrases along with the number of monthly searches with the keyword phrase. Alternately you can use a free version of the software called SEO PowerSuite (Rank Checker) to get keyword phrases.
I used this free software for the keyword “religion” and got the following keyword phrases with a sizable number of monthly searches (above 50,000) with the same keyword phrase.
“religion definition”, “definition of religion”, “list of religions”, “world religions”, “major world religions”, “true religions”, “ monotheistic religions”, “pagan religions”
SEO best practices would compel that these keyword phrases need to be incorporated in my webpage content without any alterations to get the best SEO website. Whenever someone is searching with these exact phrases and many are then my webpage is included in the search results.
Step 4: The First Meta Tags SEO - Title
Here we are concerned about the webpage title that is placed between the title meta tags in the head section of the webpage html code. This should not be confused with the heading given to the content or article. A great stress is being laid on developing indexing software which can perceive a webpage as closely as possible to how a human person would. First appearance does matter. What is it that you would notice first when you open a webpage? The title I suppose. So does the search engine spiders or crawlers. SEO best practices make it absolutely necessary that your main keyword word or key phrase is contained in the title of the webpage. For example:
Step 5: The Second Meta Tags SEO - Keywords
It is widely believed that search engines no longer consider keywords placed between the keyword meta tag in the head section of the webpage html code but generate them from the content. However SEO best practices would recommend placing all the family of keywords there along with the relevant keyword phrases. For example:
Step 6: The Third Meta Tags SEO – Description
The description of the webpage is the content picked up by search engine robots and will appear on the search pages along with the title. This has to be short, attractive and informative. Try to include as many keywords and keyword phrases without affecting the appealing degree of the same. For example:
Step 7: The First Body Tags SEO – Headings
The heading and sub headings are placed between the headings meta tags in the body of the html code. There are six types of heading and sub headings meta tags (h1 to h6). It is recommended to use most if not all of them in every article. It is absolutely necessary that every heading and sub heading contain at least one keyword or keyword phrase. For example:
Step 8: The Second Body Tags SEO – Images & Alt Tag
Many people teach that search engine robots cannot read images. But I find it naive to believe that in this day and age of technological advancement this can be true. And if they can then there is one more opportunity to place our keywords. SEO best practices require trying to incorporate as many keywords and keyword phrases while designing your images.
Secondly when you name your image files make sure to include a keyword or a keyword phrase. For example: religion.gif, true religions.jpg, monotheistic religions.png, etc
Also the html code for an image contains a tag called the alt tag. The contents in this tag were primarily for the benefit of the handicapped browsers and also users who cannot see images. This is one more opportunity to squeeze in a keyword or a keyword phrase as search engine robots give a lot of importance to it. For example:
Step 9: The Third Body Tags SEO - Links, Title Tag And Anchor Text
What are Links?
Links help the user to navigate within the website and also out of it. The links that help to navigate within the website are called internal links. The links that take the user to another website (outbound links) or bring a user from another website (inbound links or back links) are called external links. For example:
What is Anchor Text?
The text that is associated with a link that is visible to the user is called Anchor Text. For example:
Internal Links And Anchor Text
All the pages in a website need to be properly interconnected with internal links so as to make it very convenient for the visitor to navigate through the site. There should be at least one page that contains internal links to all the other pages. SEO best practices involve including keywords and keyword phrases in the Anchor Text of the internal links as well as in the title tag of the links.
External Links And Anchor Text
Search engine robots are not much interested in the number of outbound links placed in your webpage or website. However inbound links or SEO backlinks are extremely important from the side of search engine crawlers or spiders. However inbound links or SEO backlinks from any and every other site does not matter. It is absolutely necessary that inbound links or SEO backlinks come from webpages that enjoy high Page Rank and that to from a webpage that has relevant content. One has to be absolutely careful to make sure that the Anchor Text of inbound links or SEO backlinks contains your keywords or keyword phrases. The same should be applied to the title tag in the links. This title tag should not be confused with the title meta tag mentioned in step 4. For example:
This seems to be very unjust to those who may have excellent content but no SEO backlinks. But that is how it is. The simple logic is if content is good then others should be linking to it giving you SEO backlinks. It is another question however that if your page is not indexed properly then how on earth will people know about it. But you don’t have a choice.
Slow And Steady
SEO best practices involve building inbound links or SEO backlinks at a very steady pace. One inbound link every few days could be the would be the best to start with to make sure the search engine robots do not get suspicious about your SEO backlinks. Anything that does not appear natural is chastised by the robots. However if you do not have the time or the talent you can buy some quality back links. Step 10: Content Is King

Even if you have borrowed ideas it is absolutely necessary that your content is 100% plagiarism free. There are many free tools available on the internet to check for plagiarism. Do make use of them. Optional Tip - Using Traffic Exchanges
Although this may contradict search engine optimization or SEO best practices it can be quite helpful. I would like to warn you that most traffic exchanges will affect page rankings negatively and you need to choose the right ones. However be careful not to place any advertisements on your webpage during this period as your account might be suspended by the advertisement promoters.
